First of all - this feels like the devs had a handful of ideas and no idea how to deal with them, so everything ended in a blender. But the level design is pretty robust, and all the pixel graphics really add to the enemies and levels overall.Īn excellent game, difficult without being punishing, atmospheric without being tacky, and deep enough with fun boss fights and convoluted sub-quests that I would whole-heartedly endorse this game. The 2.5D style is a little bit hit-or-miss, when sometimes I couldn't judge the path forward because I mistook a bridge for an impassable wall. As you develop your arsenal of weapons (there are 4 that feel decently different from one another), the flow of combat can evolve pretty nicely a s you go. The combat is easy to learn and punishes mindless hack-n-slashing which I appreciate. Exploration is pretty nice, I found myself engaged as I went, looking out for forks in the path to try to find quest items and collectables in each area, and stretching to hit the next bonfire-style checkpoint. Overall minute-to-minute gameplay is pretty enjoyable, a mix of exploring a dark underworld and pretty snappy melee combat. The various factions are a bit generic but theres enough environmental storytelling and NPC dialogue (if you're into that) to make the world feel decently lived-in. Overall though, it is a very atmospheric experience to work your way through a broken world. Simultaneously, it is also buoyed by some overtly comedic writing from NPCs and questlines. The game as a whole is mired in the "grim dark" aesthetic and can feel surprisingly oppressive at times. This is an extremely competent, rich dark fantasy action-adventure game.
